The off-season news continues as the Flying Bison Hitting Coach for the 2027 season was announced today.
Over the last couple of weeks, Abilene’s baseball team introduced two other members of the 2027 coaching staff; Mike Spears as Manager and Manny Silva as Pitching Coach. Joining them is Flying Bison Hitting Coach, Tim Newton.
Meet Tim Newton
Newton joins the collegiate summer ball team as Hitting Coach and brings over 25 years of coaching experience to Abilene, where the Flying Bison will play their fourth season starting in June 2027.
In Summer 2026, Newton accepted an assistant coaching role at Chattanooga State Community College, working alongside the accomplished coaches Greg Dennis and Mike Spears (2027 Manager of the Abilene Flying Bison).
After playing INF/Utility at the JUCO and D1 levels (FLCC, Cornell University), Newton worked as an onfield coach, strength and conditioning trainer, and private hitting and fielding instructor for numerous organizations. Throughout his coaching career, he’s developed high level high school and collegiate players in both New York and Tennessee.
2027 Manager, Mike Spears, had this to say about his appointment of Newton as Flying Bison Hitting Coach:
“I’m happy to announce the addition of Tim Newton to the Flying Bison Staff.
Newton is the Hitting Coach at Chattanooga State Community College and is a tireless, working machine when it comes to his hitters. You will always find him in the cages working with hitters. His dedication and work ethic made him an easy choice.
Both Silva and Newton were exactly what we were looking for to build the staff!”
Newton has endless passion and energy for the game and for maximizing each player’s potential as an athlete and hitter. He stays perpetually engaged with his players through supplemental hitting and training, discussions about strategy and the mental approach to performance and hitting, as well as maintaining their bodies and health.
The Abilene Flying Bison organization is excited to welcome Tim Newton to the 2027 coaching staff and look forward to the team taking the field in June.
